How can you stay safe while traveling during construction

Tips: stay alert, limit distractions, don't speed

If you travel Interstate 4 in Orlando, you may have realized that it's more or less one big work zone. And with the big drive becoming more active, the need to be alert and focused is more important than ever.

News 6 traffic anchor Amy Biondello has some tips for keeping travel safe.

Work continues to pick up all along I-4 Ultimate, and some areas are in the beginning phases of surveying and planning.
Others, like Maitland Boulevard, Kirkman Road and Princeton Street, are already taking on a new shape.

With lanes shifting, ramps moving and more workers actively on the highway at all hours, it’s as important as ever to practice safe driving while on the interstate.

Here are some factors to keep in mind. Remember that work zones are frequently changing, so that means:

  • Lanes may be closed or narrowed.
  • Speed limits may suddenly decrease.
  • Sudden traffic slowdowns are more frequent.
  • Traffic violations lead to doubled fines.

Sticking to the basics can help prevent accidents and keep both drivers and workers safe.

Start with being alert and really pay attention to what’s happening around you.

Limit distractions  put the phone down and try to avoid things like playing with the radio. Keep your focus on driving.

Keep extra space between yourself and the car in front of you, so if they slam on the brakes you won’t slam into them.

Don’t speed. Slowing down is one of the first and most basic things you can do to help protect workers on the highway.

Remember to keep in mind when you’re going through a construction zone that you’re driving through someone’s workplace, and there are frequently people who are very vulnerable and very close to you. And it bears repeating, fines in work zones are doubled.
