May brings more major nighttime projects along I-4

Rolling roadblocks will occur nightly

ORLANDO, Fla. – May has just begun but the month is proving to be a busy one for the Big Drive with overnight travelers the hardest hit.

Big projects are ramping up, including some in the busiest areas along Interstate 4.

“We have bridge work that continues down at the Kirkman Road interchange. We’ve got some more bridge beams that will be delivered this week and next week. And then next weekend we’ll have bridge beams that are set overnight,” said Dave Parks, public information officer for the I-4 Ultimate project.

As a result of these projects, rolling roadblocks will be back in effect.

“Those are during the late night overnight hours but if folks get caught in behind that, know that you could be there as long as 30 minutes working your way through that rolling roadblock,” Parks said.

Major work also continues along Kaley and Fairbanks avenues. Kaley will be closed nightly under I-4 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. through late May. Drivers will be detoured onto Michigan Street.

On Fairbanks, all eastbound lanes will close under I-4 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. One lane will stay open heading westbound through the first week of May. Then that pattern will flip-flop until the work wraps up, also in late May. Lee Road is the detour for the Fairbanks work.

There are some new construction additions as well.

“We’ve got some new construction activities just south of downtown at the intersections of Orange Blossom Trail and I-4. As well as where I-4 travels over top of Rio Grande Avenue,” Parks said. “If you’re an overnight traveler definitely keep your eyes out for the flashing lights, follow detours. All of our detours are well marked.”
