Bill could reduce number of specialty license plates

Measure would raise number of pre-orders required to stay in circulation

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – You see them on the road all the time, but if some lawmakers have it their way, there could be fewer specialty license plates available to Florida drivers.

A Senate subcommittee approved a bill that would raise the number of pre-orders required to stay in circulation. Currently, the threshold is 1,000. But under the new bill, it would increase to 4,000.

Plates affected by the increase include the Orlando Magic specialty plate, since only 3,200 have been issued.

Those celebrating NASCAR, tennis and the Miami Marlins would also be on the chopping block.

A similar bill is moving through the House. If it passes, plates currently on the road wouldn't be discontinued until 2018.
