FHP's 'Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving' campaign in effect for Cinco de Mayo

Just in time for Cinco De Mayo, Florida Highway Patrol is stepping up their presence on the roadways and launching a campaign to remind drivers about the dangers of drinking and driving.

With the popularity of Cinco de Mayo on the rise, so too are the number of people having a drink, or a drink too many, and getting behind the wheel.

"I think a lot of people this holiday, so to speak, has begot more popular," FHP Public Affairs Officer Kim Montes said. "And over the years more people tend to go out and drink."

There's been a recent shift away from more traditional party holidays.

"A lot of people believe it or not on New Year's Eve are starting to behave a lot more," Montes said. "They use Uber, they do ride sharing, they plan for somebody to have a designated driver."

But that same preparedness hasn't necessarily made the reach to Cinco de Mayo.

Police are seeing more and more drunken drivers out on May 5, so in an effort to bring awareness and start a conversation about staying safe and being prepared FHP launched a "Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving" campaign this week focusing on the Cinco crowd.

"Both in Orange and Seminole counties there will be DUI wolf packs. Where extra officers will be specifically looking for people who are impaired on that night," Montes said.
