DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the past month, Brenton Deschaine has been in the hospital enduring the aftermath of a hit-and-run accident caught on camera.
After six operations, skin graphs, and what he described as long and painful days, Deschaine, 59, was able to return to his home.
Deschaine told Local 6 what happened after he was hit on Sept. 17.
"When I was laying on the ground, I could look at it -- my foots going one way -- piece of bone going the other," he said.
Deschaine lost his left leg from the knee down.
A camera at the scene of the hit-and-run captured video of the entire accident. Deschaine was on his motorcycle when he stopped at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and Bellevue Avenue in Daytona Beach. His light turned green just after 3 p.m.
He started moving, but was hit within seconds and vaulted onto the hood of a gray Chevy after the driver blew a red light.
Deschaine fell down onto the street as the Chevy continued moving forward.
"It's one thing to hit somebody and fess up to it, and help 'em, but when you drive right off, it ain't right," he said.
Police were able to obtain a license plate number, Florida tag 795PLV, from the video and witnesses.
The woman who owns the car, Kanisha Kelly, lives a mile away from the scene of the accident. Local 6's Kristin Giannas went to her apartment on Wednesday, but got no answer.
According to police, Kelly said she doesn't know who had the car at the time of the accident. No one has been charged, and police said they're still searching for the driver.
