Marion County deputy hits, injures pedestrian

22-year-old Steven Lee Lynch suffers critical injuries

BELLEVIEW, Fla. - An off-duty Marion County sheriff's deputy struck and critically injured a pedestrian, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The FHP says 22-year-old Steven Lee Lynch was walking in the road early Sunday morning when he was hit by a patrol car driven by 23-year-old Elizabeth Hart.

According to troopers, the deputy didn't seen Lynch until the last second.

The Ocala Star-Banner reports the stretch of the two-lane Baseline Road near Belleview is dark and unlighted. The speed limit is 55 mph.

Lynch was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he was admitted in critical condition to the intensive care unit.

The FHP says it was not known why Lynch was walking along that stretch of highway.

An investigation continues.
