Sumter County Fire & EMS officials said the driver was assessed for injuries while crews began to secure vehicle hazards and mitigate a fuel leak. It was estimated that more than 50 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the semi's ruptured saddle tanks.

Crews were able to contain the fuel leak, but 90 gallons of fuel had leaked out before hazmat crews were able to completely secure the leak, officials said. A mitigation company was requested to begin cleanup of the fuel spill and contaminated soil. Officials said there were no contents in the trailer.

The driver was taken to South Lake Hospital in stable condition, officials said. The semi was removed by a tow company.

Traffic was diverted onto U.S. Highway 301. Officials said law enforcement eventually began opening the Turnpike as crews cleared at 7:45 p.m.
