Car hits, kills man in wheelchair in Orange County

Florida Highway Patrol IDs man as 78-year-old Phillip Torbin

ORLANDO, Fla. – A vehicle struck and killed a 78-year-old man in a wheelchair early Thursday in Orange County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at 5:15 a.m. on Orange Blossom Trail at Holden Avenue.

According to the FHP, a 44-year-old Orlando woman was driving a 1999 Ford Mercury southbound on OBT when she struck the man, identified by troopers as Phillip Torbin, of Orlando.

Torbin who was in a crosswalk when he was struck, but witnesses said the driver had a green light, according to the FHP.

Torbin was ejected from his wheelchair, the FHP said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to an FHP report.

Roads were closed in the area after the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

No other details have been released.
