Canaveral Port Authority green-lights first steps for new terminal

New terminal will replace Terminal 3

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Canaveral's Port Authority gave the go-ahead Wednesday to get things rolling on a brand new terminal.

It's just the beginning of a nearly two-year process. Port Authority construction engineers must first look for someone to design the new space. The new terminal will replace Terminal 3 and will be much bigger, holding up to 8,000 people. The changes will also include a new parking garage and likely widening of the road.

"(We will) select a designer, an engineer, an intellectual team. It'll take us a couple months to actually get them on board; execute a contract with them," senior director of engineering construction and facilities Bill Crowe said.

Port engineers said it's all about timing. The cruise industry isn't getting any smaller and they want to be a prime spot for vacationers to sail off.

"The market is a good market. They are building new ships, creating new itineraries and are looking for deep-water home ports, and Port Canaveral is a good example," Crowe said.

The new port terminal is expected to open in December 2019.
