The National Hurricane Center's latest path for Tropical Storm Fay moves the system on land earlier before it passes through Central Florida as a weak hurricane or strong tropical storm.

The cone of projected movement indicates that Fay would make landfall near Sarasota as a possible Category 1 hurricane Tuesday.

On the current projected path, winds associated with the weather system could be anywhere between 74 to 95 mph near Key West.

"Instead of taking the storm further out into the Gulf of Mexico, now it looks like Fay will be coming closer to Central Florida," Local 6's Rob Eicher said. "It looks like it will come through western sections of Central Florida as a strong tropical storm or weak hurricane during the day on Tuesday and during the early part of the day on Wednesday."

The path jogged east on Saturday and put the projected path of movement through Central Florida some time Tuesday night or early Wednesday.

"It looks more and more like Fay will be impacting our weather during the day on Tuesday," Eicher said.

Winds were expected to remain about 45 mph Saturday as the system moved near Cuba.

Fay is heading toward the west at about 15 mph. As of 5 p.m. EDT, maximum sustained winds were 40 mph with some higher gusting.
