Volusia Sandbags Offered; Closings

The following is information concerning Volusia County issued Aug. 20:

SCHOOLS:

Public schools in Volusia County will be closed Thursday due to the strong tropical force winds and heavy rains projected from Tropical Storm Fay.

All school activities and events and extended day programs also are canceled. District administrative offices also will be closed, with only designated essential emergency personnel asked to report to work.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will be open Thursday.

Volusia County Government offices will be open Thursday. The Volusia County Council will convene its regularly scheduled meeting at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W.Indiana Ave., DeLand.

There have been no boil-water notices issued in Volusia County.


DAYTONA BEACH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

All Delta Air Lines scheduled flights for the remainder of the day have been canceled. In addition, the 6 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. Thursday Delta Air Line flights have been canceled.

The 7:53 a.m. U.S. Air flight scheduled to depart Thursday morning has been canceled.

The Continental Airlines flight is still scheduled to arrive at 9:45 a.m. and depart at 10:15 a.m. Thursday.

Residents should call the airlines to check flight information.


HOTLINE: The Citizen Information Center remains open until 10 p.m. Wednesday night. The number for the public to call is (866) 345-0345.

CORRECTION: Daytona Beach’s citizen hotline closed at 4 p.m. today.


SANDBAG UPDATE:

The City of Deltona will have sandbags at Wes Crile Park, 1537 Norbert Terrace, until 10 p.m. today. Residents should bring their own shovels. Sandbags are limited to five per person and must be self-filled.

Sandbags are available to Orange City residents from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Orange City Fire Station, 215 N. Holly Ave. Although there are a few shovels available, residents should be prepared to fill the bags themselves. There is a limit of 10 bags per person.

The City of Ormond Beach sandbag distribution center at 501 N. Orchard St., Ormond Beach, will close at 7 p.m. today and reopen at 8 a.m. Thursday. Residents must show proof of residency and can receive 10 sandbags per vehicle. Call (386) 676-3220 for more information.

The City of South Daytona has sand and sandbags available until 7:30 p.m. tonight at their public works facility, 1770 Segrave St. (south end of operations building) and their Reed Canal Stormwater Facility, 746 Reed Canal Road (across Lantern Park subdivision). These facilities will be reopening at 7 a.m. Thursday if necessary. Sandbags are for South Daytona residents only and identification will be requested. Residents also will need a shovel to fill their bags.

DAYTONA BEACH -- The City of Daytona Beach has canceled today’s budget workshop and City Commission meeting. The budget workshop is rescheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at City Hall, 301 S. Ridgewood Ave. Items on tonight’s City Commission agenda will be placed on the agenda for the City Commission meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 3. Other canceled meetings include the Daytona Beach Housing Authority at 5 p.m. today, the police department’s COMPSTAT meeting at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, and the city’s Board of Adjustment meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday.

DEBARY -- The City of DeBary has canceled tonight’s City Council meeting and rescheduled it for Wednesday, Aug. 27.

DELTONA -- Waste Services Inc. will pick up all garbage routes as scheduled in the City of Deltona.

EDGEWATER -- City offices were closed today. All city offices and services (including trash and recycling pickups will resume Thursday if weather permits).

Residents can call (386) 424-2400 for an automated message with local information. For further information, residents may call (386) 424-2445 (this number will be answered by fire-rescue staff).

Residents should direct calls regarding sewer and water issues, flooding and property damage to (386) 424-2445.

HOLLY HILL

All City of Holly Hill general government services will be closed Thursday. Normal operations are expected to resume Friday.

ORANGE CITY

All city offices will be closed Thursday. Normal operations are expected to resume Friday.

ORMOND BEACH

  • City Hall will be closed until noon Thursday.
  • Thursday’s City Commission meeting has been canceled and will be rescheduled.
  • The South Ormond Neighborhood Center, Nova Community Center, Ormond Beach Sports Complex, Nova Community Park, Nova Gymnastic Center, Ormond Beach Tennis Center, Casements, Senior Center and Performing Arts Center will be closed Thursday.

    PONCE INLET

  • The Town of Ponce Inlet’s Council meeting has been canceled and will be rescheduled.

    PORT ORANGE

  • The city has canceled all recreational activities for Thursday.
  • The Port Orange Adult Activity Center will remain closed Thursday.
  • The boat ramps at Causeway Park remain closed.
  • Garbage collection will follow its normal schedule.

    SOUTH DAYTONA:

  • The One-Stop Employment Centers in DeLand, Daytona Beach and Palm Coast have canceled all workshops and orientations scheduled for job seekers Thursday, Aug. 21. Additional job seeker services are expected to remain in full operation.
