OVIEDO, Fla. -- Strong storms rocked portions of Central Florida Tuesday night, downing trees, flooding streets, causing power outages and destroying a home.
A lightning bolt struck an Oviedo house located at 304 Radisson Place, sparking a fire that spread quickly and destroyed the home. Five people were inside the home, but no one was injured.
Flames popped out of the attic and devoured the home, giving off a heat that made neighbors and onlookers keep their distance.
Pedro Vasallo lives next door to the scorched home and said when he thought his house had been hit when he heard the strike.
"It was that intense -- the lightning strike," he said.
Vasallo watched the blaze from his back yard and said he was shocked at how close the strike was to his own home.
"Just shocking -- their whole house is going to be a total loss. Could have been mine," Vasallo said.
Meanwhile, Seminole County firefighters responded to several fires Monday night, most of which were believed to have been caused by lightning.
Severe thunderstorms ripped through Seminole, Orange, Lake and Volusia counties, prompting weather warnings.
The storms also affected preparations for the scheduled Wednesday morning launch of space shuttle Endeavour.
Thunderstorms forced NASA to delay the fueling of Endeavour. Right at the time fueling should have begun Tuesday night, thunder rumbled across the launch site and it was drizzling.
This is NASA's second attempt to launch Endeavour and seven astronauts on the space station construction mission and the last one this month. If Endeavour isn't flying by Wednesday, it will have to make way for an unmanned moon shot and wait until July.
A leak in a hydrogen gas vent line thwarted Saturday's attempt, the same kind of problem that stalled a shuttle flight in March. The same sort of repairs were done.
The severe thunderstorms were actually to the north and west of Kennedy Space Center, but they posed a threat of lightning at the launch pad, a fueling violation.
