MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. -- A tourist from Oklahoma was killed after a group of people were stuck by lightning Wednesday afternoon on Melbourne Beach as strong thunderstorms rolled through Central Florida.
Frank Paxton, 54, was pronounced dead at Palms Regional Medical Center after suffering cardiac arrest, hospital officials said.
Paxton's wife and adult son were transported to the hospital as well with minor burn injuries from the lightning strike, which occurred near state Road A1A and Ocean Boulevard, Brevard County fire officials said.
Other beachgoers also felt the impact of the bolt.
"We had just gotten out on the beach when it started pouring and it cracked on the guy. It was pretty scary," a man named Juan said. "The guy's family were screaming, 'Help my family, help my family!' We felt the static, so did everybody that was on the beach."
"We heard the lightning, it came right up to us," said a woman named Virginia.
"The back of my hat had this metal thing on it," said Juan, pointing to a buckle. "It hit this (and it) felt like I got hit with a rock in the back of my head."
"It could have been any of us. It could have been my children," Virginia said.
Meanwhile, two men were struck by lightning, knocking one of them unconscious, in Lake County.
The victims were struck at about 1:30 p.m. at a resident-use landfill near Log House Road in Clermont, according to a Lake County Environmental Services supervisor.
The men were standing on a brush pile when they were struck, the supervisor said.
The victim who was more seriously injured, Charles Stalcup, was taken to a nearby hospital, according to Lake-Sumter EMS officials, who wanted to airlift the patient but were unable because of poor flight conditions. The other person, David Arnone, was taken to a hospital but was in stable condition, officials said.
