Polk County authorities were still trying to tally the damage on Friday. The National Weather Service confirmed that the damage was caused by two tornados. No serious injuries were reported.

The damage was most severe at the Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort near Haines City, but the storm system left its mark on an 80-mile swath.

Mobile homes were damaged in Zephyrhills and trees were downed in Citrus County, and 3/4-inch hail fell on Florida's Atlantic Coast.

Heavy rain continued on Friday, and another line of Gulf of Mexico storms was expected to cross Florida on Friday before clearing up over the weekend.

Storms Drench Central Florida

Strong storms producing tornado warnings, driving rain and countless lightning strikes pounded Central Florida on Thursday.

Trained weather spotters from the Brevard County Fire Department reported a different funnel cloud a mile north of Mims at 2:58 p.m. Sheriff's deputies said they received a report of a tornado touchdown in a wooded area near U.S. 1 and state Road 46, but there was no damage.

Earlier Thursday, Ocala Fire Rescue responded to nearly two dozen 911 calls during severe weather. Firefighters responded to a variety of incidents, including two water rescues in which citizens were trapped in their cars.

Other 911 calls consisted of fire alarms to commercial buildings, vehicle accidents and medical emergencies. The storms, however, did not cause any serious injuries.

Ocala police said there was substantial flooding throughout the city. Police said many roadways and intersections have high water levels. Drivers are advised to slow down and watch for standing water.

The ground also opened up at the Seville Apartments off Pine Hills Road in Orange County, where a hole about 10 to 15 feet in diameter opened in the ground. Police taped off the area to protect anyone from falling in.

The New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Ocala rushed to pump floodwaters out while two nearby retention ponds overflowed. The church's office, kitchen and parking lot were flooded.

At least 20,000 sand bags are being made available to Marion County residents at the Dunnellon Public Service at 11924 Bostick St. and Jervey Gantt Park at 1211 Southeast 22nd Road.

The rain also forced officials to close numerous roadways.

Ocala police closed Northeast 18th Avenue between Northeast 4th Street and Northeast 5th Street, Northwest 16th Street between Northwest 18th Avenue and Northwest 21st Avenue and the intersection of Northwest 6th Avenue and Northwest 26th Street.

Severe weather forced the Marion County School Board to cancel all evening activities on Thursday. FCAT testing will resume on Friday after being interrupted Thursday.

A Local 6 News crew reported flooding in Mt. Dora at Highland Street and Camp Street.

Looking ahead, there is a 60 percent chance of rain on Friday, but storms are expected to move away by the weekend with some clouds and highs in the 70s forecasted for Saturday and Sunday.
