The latest projected path of Tropical Storm Gamma shows the system hitting Florida with winds of 65 mph early next week, according to Local 6 meteorologist Tom Sorrells.

Friday night, Central Florida was put in the National Hurricane Center's projected path of movement.

"Here is the really, really troubling part about this, yes it will drop 6 to 8 inches of rain on everyone from Belize up to the Yucatan Peninsula to western Cuba," Sorrells said. "But by Sunday it will have maximum winds of 65 mph and by Monday at 1 p.m. with winds of 65 mph pounding on shore somewhere in South Florida."

Tropical Storm Gamma formed Friday off the coast of Central America.

By Monday, residents in parts of Central Florida could be dealing with rain from the system, Sorrells said.

Heavy rain is expected in Florida by Sunday.

"Right now, it looks like a South Florida event," Sorrells said.

Tropical storm warnings were issued for the entire coast of Belize and the Bay Islands of Honduras. Mexico issued a tropical storm watch for the eastern Yucatan Peninsula, which was hit hard in October by Hurricane Wilma.

The long-term track from the National Hurricane Center indicated that Gamma may take a track similar to Wilma's and head northeast toward the Florida Peninsula. Wilma tore across the southern portion of the state on Oct. 24, causing widespread damage and power outages.

At 4 p.m. EST, Gamma's maximum sustained winds were 40 mph and it was located about 40 miles north of Limon, Honduras, and moving erratically toward the west-northwest at about 5 mph.

Gamma is the 24th named storm of the busiest Atlantic hurricane season on record. There have been 13 hurricanes this year, another record.
