Scientists are poised to launch drones, better known for their role in military situations, to explore the storms at levels that are too dangerous for "hurricane hunter" aircraft to probe, according to a Washington Post report.
The unmanned aircraft will hopefully gather new information about wind speeds at Earth's surface and how a hurricane feeds itself on the warmth of the ocean.
The report said the drones can be launched from an automobile with the aid of a rooftop launcher and can stay in the air for as long as 20 hours.
Sensors on the craft's wings will transmit meteorological information to the National Hurricane Center and NOAA's Hurricane Research Division.
Five drones are waiting in Boca Chica Key, Fla., for a hurricane to form, the report said.
The $300,000 for the project came from NOAA and NASA.
