NWS: Funnel cloud spotted over Merritt Island, more possible
National Weather Service tells Florida Today funnel cloud reported from Air Force Station
A funnel cloud was spotted over Merritt Island Tuesday afternoon, and forecasters at the National Weather Service in Melbourne say additional funnel formations are possible in Central Brevard.
Local 6 news partner Florida Today reports the weather service says that storms producing strong winds and funnel clouds are possible in the areas of Port St. John and Titusville through about 4:30 p.m. The funnel cloud spotted earlier this afternoon was reported about 3:35 p.m.
“It was Cape Canaveral Air Force Station,” NWS meteorologist Scott Kelly told Florida Today. “They observed it to the west over Merritt Island.”
Kelly said any funnel clouds that form are not expected to touch down. Boaters should be cautious, he said, should rotational winds create dangerous conditions on the intracoastal waterways.
Thunderstorms and showers are expected to continue through Tuesday night.
“We’ve had quite a bit of rain here in Brevard County today,” he said. “It looks like most of the heavy rain is over, but there may be some additional showers overnight coming in off the Atlantic.”
