Weather officials said Wednesday that there's a 50 percent chance of development over the next five days.

"There could be tropical development with an area of disturbed weather over the Bahamas," News 6 meteorologist Troy Bridges said earlier. "This area of thunderstorms will increase rain chances, rip currents and seas as we head into the holiday weekend."

Most models take the area of low pressure into the Carolinas, likely near Myrtle Beach, sometime Saturday or Sunday.

If it gained tropical storm force (39 mph), the system would be named Bonnie.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially starts June 1.

Sub-Tropical Storm Alex became a named storm four months ago, the first time since 1978 that Central Florida had a named storm in the Atlantic in January.

Meanwhile, rain chances will remain low across Central Florida on Wednesday and Thursday as more dry air builds in.

The chance of rain will be 10 percent or less each afternoon. High temperatures will be in the upper 80s.

Rain chances increase to 30 percent Friday and 40 percent Saturday. Expect highs in the mid-80s on Friday and the upper 80s for the weekend.

"Rain chances will be as high as 50 percent on Sunday and Memorial Day as we pinpoint the low moving into the Carolinas," Bridges said.
