DeLAND, Fla. – An official groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday for the new SunRail station in DeLand, a $43 million project that will add more than 12 miles to the rail service that runs through Central Florida.
The project will connect the DeBary station to the the DeLand Amtrak Station at 2491 Old New York Ave., becoming SunRail’s 17th stop on its 61-mile corridor.
Officials say the station will help spur economic growth in west Volusia County and downtown DeLand.
“Every station that’s been built along this corridor so far has seen enourmous economic growth,” said John Purdue, secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation. “The quality of life, the economy, the job market has just grown leaps and bounds every time a station’s been built on this corridor.”
