Extreme heat swamps Florida this week. Here’s what you need to know

May 6, 2024

ORLANDO, Fla. – Central Florida is diving head first into summer, although it’s six weeks away, with an early season heat wave arriving by midweek.

Looking Ahead

To start the workweek in the Orlando area, expect a typical summer story to play out through the afternoon hours.

A steady southeast flow will send a few showers along the coast in the morning, with activity shifting inland into the afternoon as the sea breezes develop.

Rain coverage sits at 20% along the coast and 30-40% for neighborhoods between I-4 and I-75. Sufficient instability will support a few isolated storms capable of producing lightning, gusty winds and brief downpours through sundown.

Rain Chances May 6th

Before the rain moves in and cools down the air a bit, expect highs to reach the mid-80s along the coast and the low 90s further inland.

Starting Wednesday, less rain will develop through the afternoon, limiting our main cooling factor. Through Friday, highs will be soar into the upper 90s which will be close to breaking century-old records set in 1915 and 1916.
