Arrest made in Deltona carjacking, deputies say

A man accused of holding a gun to a victim's head during a carjacking in Deltona in August has been arrested in connection with the crime, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested Gustavo Rivera, 36, in Orange County on Wednesday. Details of the circumstance of his arrest were not immediately available.

The carjacking victim told deputies that he was picking up a coworker on Merrimac Street around 5:52 a.m. on Aug. 17 when a gray car pulled up and two men got out. 

Rivera held the man at gunpoint while his accomplice, Walter Hager, 38, stole the truck, the report said.

Hager was arrested two days after the carjacking on unrelated drug charges. He was later charged with principal to carjacking with a firearm and grand theft auto, deputies said.

Before the arrests, deputies described the at-large suspects as men with a significant criminal history.

"Rivera has 13 past felony charges related to narcotics, grand theft auto, battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. Hager has 37 past felony charges related to narcotics, burglary, escape, battery, aggravated battery with a firearm, theft, resisting a law enforcement officer without violence and firing a missile into a dwelling, vehicle or building," the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Rivera was charged with armed carjacking, carrying a concealed firearm during the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
