Vanessa Araiza joined the News 6 team in August of 2016 as dayside reporter.
Vanessa grew up in the Ocala area and is happy to be back in the Sunshine State. The Ocala-area native graduated from the University of West Florida with a Bachelors in Communications and a specialization in Journalism. She quickly landed her first reporting job at WTVY in Dothan, Alabama covering everything from devastating severe weather to the Geneva County massacre. However, one of her most memorable stories was traveling with a group of military veterans to Washington D.C. for the Wiregrass honor flight. During her four year tenure she also won an Associated Press award for Best Feature reporter.
In 2011, Araiza moved to Birmingham, Alabama as a reporter for WBRC. Within a year she was promoted as the weekend anchor.
While in the Magic City, she investigated the City Council’s controversial budget scandal and covered countless hours of severe weather; including a devastating tornado on Christmas day in 2015. Her station was later awarded an Edward R. Murrow for their outstanding wall to wall coverage.
Araiza says while it’s always an honor to be recognized for your work, it’s a privilege to be able to tell the stories of everyday people; a privilege that truly fuels her passion for journalism. If you have any story ideas, look for Vanessa Araiza on Facebook and Twitter!
