Hyundai gets into subcompact SUV market

All-New Kona competes in growing segment

Hyundai will soon be selling a subcompact SUV to compete in an increasingly crowded segment of the industry.

On Tuesday, the company unveiled the all-new Kona. It's smaller than Hyundai's other SUVs and is intended to compete with other cars like the Chevrolet Trax, Jeep Renegade, Honda HR-V and the all-new Nissan Rogue Sport.

The outside of the car features some chunky black plastic bits that Hyundai refers to as "armor." They give the car a do-anything and go-anywhere type of look.

The horizontal slits at the top of the front end are the daytime running lights. The regular headlights are just below it, similar to the configuration in the Jeep Cherokee.

Helping to set the exterior apart is an available two-tone roof color combination.

Inside, the car has all the tech and comforts one would expect in a modern car, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

The middle of the dashboard features a prominent 5-, 7- or 8-inch touchscreen, depending on the model and the market.

There's also an available head-up display above the instrument cluster to give the driver information about speed and directions without needing to look down.

Powering the little SUV will be either a 2-liter 4-cylinder engine or a 1.6 turbo direct-injection engine that kicks out even more power. Other markets in the world will get even more engine options.

The new Kona goes on sale in Korea later this month and then will be offered in Europe and North America.
