Hyundai and Kia are recalling more than a half-million compact cars in the U.S. due to brake lights staying on after the pedal is released, The Associated Press reported.

A polymer stopper pad between the pedal arm and the light switch can deteriorate, which can cause the switch to stay on, the companies said in documents filed with the government, the AP reported.

The faulty pad can keep the brake lights illuminated and allow shifting out of park without a foot on the brake, the AP reported.

The vehicles subject to the recall include 390,000 2013-14 Hyundai Elantra cars and 134,000 2012-14 Kia Forte cars, the AP reported.

No crashes or injuries as a result of the issue have been reported, according to the AP.

Kia's recall starts Jan. 30, the AP reported. Hyundai's begins Feb. 8.

Dealers will replace the brake stopper pad, the AP reported.
