Melbourne cash mobs to support local businesses

Melbourne holds first "cash mob" event

MELBOURNE, Fla. - One locally owned business in Melbourne should have record sales Saturday. They'll be the target of a "cash mob".

It's the latest trend to support local businesses. The idea is to get the word out through social media to converge on one local business at a specific time.

Mobbers for Saturday's event are asked to meet in front of Matt's Casbah, 801 New Haven Ave. at 9:30 a.m. The mob will then proceed to the chosen business, which will be kept secret until the day of the event.

Event organizer Greg Jones says the surprise is just for the mobbers. The target business was notified about 3 weeks ago so they could prepare for the crowd.

"It is a balance of mob spontaneity and careful planning" Jones said, "No one wins if the mob experience is bad for the participants or the business."

The rules of the cash mob are simple. Spend at least $20 at the designated business, meet three people you don't already know and have fun.
