Lockdown lifted at Lake George Elementary School

Authorities receive report of suspicious person on campus

ORLANDO, Fla. – An Orange County elementary school was placed on lockdown for nearly two hours Thursday morning.

Lake George Elementary School on Gatlin Avenue in Orlando was locked down for a report of a "suspicious person" on campus around 9:33 a.m., an Orange County Public Schools official said.

A spokeswoman said authorities were called after a student told a school official that there was someone on campus who wasn't a student.

Officials with the Orange County Sheriff's Office said that suspicious person was an individual between 11 and 12 years old who was "a possible threat."

Debra Rusk is the grandmother of a third-grader. She waited anxiously outside of the school during the lockdown.

"It's a shame that the kids have to do this. They have to be afraid to go to school," Rusk said.

Brian Boodram's 6-year-old son said he hid in a closet while deputies armed with rifles searched the school.

He joined other parents who stood outside of the locked gates and waited for news on what was happening at the school.

"You feel so helpless. All the parents are standing here not knowing what was going on inside," Boodram said.

Deputies searched the campus and did not find anyone suspicious, according to officials.

The lockdown was lifted at about 11 a.m., along with parents' concerns.

"It was scary. Scary and nervous," one mother said as she picked up her child.

Parents waited anxiously outside of the school entrance as deputies checked their IDs and let them in to pick up their students.

All of the parents were thankful to reunite with their kids and were happy that they were safe.

"With everything that has happened before, you don't know what to expect, unfortunately," Boodram said.

School district officials said a student at nearby Conway Middle School made a verbal threat against the elementary school this week. A district spokesperson said they do not believe the threat is connected to Thursday's incident.

No other details have been released.
