Teen took loaded gun to Port Orange school, deputies say

Deputy charges Atlantic High School student with felony

PORT ORANGE, Fla. – A student at Atlantic High School in Port Orange faces felony charges after a loaded gun was found in his backpack, deputies said.

The gun was discovered in the 17-year-old’s backpack after Daytona Beach police went to Atlantic High to interview him about a shooting case, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the .45-caliber pistol had the hammer cocked back, with one round in the chamber and four rounds in the magazine.

There were no threats made prior to the discovery of the gun, officials said.

Atlantic High School officials sent a message to parents about the incident.

"Law enforcement was looking for a student thought to have a weapon on campus in reference to an off-campus incident. There's no indication the student had any ill intentions at the school," the message said.

A school resource deputy charged the teen with possessing a firearm on a school campus.

Daytona Beach police have not released any information about the shooting case in which the teen was questioned.
