UCF frat member accused of putting gun to pledge's head

Alpha Epsilon Pi temporarily suspended

ORLANDO, Fla. – A fraternity and sorority at the University of Central Florida have been temporarily suspended in separate incidents, including one involving a gun, according to documents obtained by News 6.

The Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity was suspended after a member was accused of putting a rifle to the head of a blindfolded pledge who questioned whether the gun was real after hearing a "racking" sound, the school said.

The incident came to light via an email sent to the UCF Police Department last month by an anonymous student.

It's not known if the gun was real or if it was loaded.

Police forwarded the email to university officials, and Alpha Epsilon Pi, which says it promotes leadership in the Jewish community, was suspended. The frat was allowed to hold chapter meetings with school staff monitoring, according to a Feb. 16 letter sent to the fraternity.

Meanwhile, UCF sorority Mu Sigma Upsilon was also suspended last month over hazing accusations.

A pledge said she was told that she could not socialize with anyone outside the sorority during the six-week pledging process, according to school documents.

The complaint was forwarded to the student conduct office, which is investigating the allegations, according to a Feb. 24 letter.

The suspensions come after Rollins College in Winter Park suspended all fraternity life activities because of "high-risk behavior," officials said.

A college spokeswoman said there had been problems all semester at the fraternities but declined to elaborate.

The fraternity issued this statement regarding the incident.

"Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity has a longstanding and strict anti-hazing policy that all of our members and potential members should be aware of. We have removed the member who was responsible for this incident and continues to educate the remaining members about our policies. This was not a condoned action by the chapter. Rather, it represents the actions of a rogue member who, again, has been suspended from the fraternity pending his permanent removal. Our staff continues to work with the UCF administration and our chapter leaders to ensure that this type of behavior never happens again. Hazing has no place in our fraternity," Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity spokesman, Jonathan Pierce said.

Police documents show that at least one Rollins student was taken to the hospital after an altercation with three other students who were members of a different fraternity.
