Week 2 Athlete of the Week: Cannon Thompson

Lake Mary senior quarterback throws for 240 yards

ORLANDO, Fla – Lake Mary had to work overtime in a thrilling week two victory over Osceola. The Rams, led by senior quarterback Cannon Thompson, defeated the Kowboys 29-28.

"We knew early in the week they were keying on us," said Thompson, "We got what we had to get done and it was fun."

Thompson was one of the heroes of the game. Responsible for 240 yards of offense through the air and on the ground, he ran for two touchdowns, passed for another and helped keep Lake Mary undefeated. Thompson has developed into a dual threat on the field. A fun-loving leader off of it.

"I like keeping it loose on the field so lots of guys might tell you I'm never too uptight, even during big games," Thompson said.  "I'm pretty laid back."

Cannon sounds like the perfect first name for a quarterback and it sounds like Thompson was born to play the position.

"I had a football before I could hold it. So I left the hospital with a football and a little Florida State jumpsuit," Thompson said, "It's funny, I actually told my dad, I was probably, like, 5, 6, I wanted to play quarterback."

Thompson says he has some personal goals this season. He'd like to set a few lake Mary records before he leaves, but he added that those are secondary to wins.

The 2-0 Rams, ranked 14th in the state, have a bye in week three. They host DeLand on Friday, Sept. 19.
