Edgewater's Craig Rucker named Athlete of the Week

Orange County football star has 'fight in his heart'

ORLANDO, Fla. – At 5-foot-8, Edgewater receiver Craig Rucker is described as dynamite on the field. His first touchdown against Ocoee last Friday was a 50-yard-sprint.

" I had to drive the ball all way down the field," Rucker said. "I was kind of tired, but they don't stop me. I've got fight in my heart."

Rucker took charge throughout the game, rushing for two more touchdowns and leading the Eagles to a 20-7 win over their district rival.

As senior captain, Rucker is aiming for a championship this season. Fast and elusive on game days, Rucker is even quicker to deflect attention and praise.

"I couldn't do it by myself. The offensive line, receivers, the defense holding it down, everything coming together," Rucker said. "We (are) all coming together as one, not just me."

While a championship could be in his future, a college football career with Utah State definitely is. Rucker accepted a scholarship to the Mountain West school in May.

"He's probably the smallest guy on the field but he's got the biggest heart out there," Edgewater head coach Rich Bedesem said. "He probably carried the ball 30, 40 times, played defense, special teams. He does it all for us."
