ORLANDO, Fla. – SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment is joining a United Arab Emirates company to help develop the first SeaWorld park outside the U.S. -- the first new SeaWorld park without orcas.
SeaWorld CEO Joel Manby tells The Associated Press the park planned for Abu Dhabi is vital to a company move away from orcas. The orcas have been the focus of campaigns against SeaWorld by animal rights activists.
SeaWorld and developer Miral Asset Management announced Tuesday that the park will open in 2022 on Abu Dhabi's Yas Island. It's being built by the developer, with SeaWorld licensing its brand and providing animal care expertise.
In March, SeaWorld decided to end its orca breeding program amid ongoing pressure following the 2013 release of the critical documentary "Blackfish."
