Volunteers needed to knit purple baby hats

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – A desperate call has been made for volunteers to help knit 5,000 purple baby hats by October.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) is looking to produce the hats for their Click for Babies campaign that raises awareness of Shaken Baby Syndrome.

The campaign is being run to help prevent serious brain injuries from "forcefully shaking an infant or young child."

According to ABC News, the color of the hats represents the "purple period" that is the top trigger for shaking a baby, which is frustration due to crying.

  • P - Peak of crying
  • U - Unexpected
  • R - Resists Soothing
  • P - Pain-like Face
  • L - Long Lasting
  • E - Evening

The OSDH fell short of its goal last year and is looking for help to reach 5,000 knit caps. The deadline to collect caps is Oct. 1 and they will then be distributed to families.
