No cherry on top? Struggling Steak 'n Shake hopes to save $1 million

Restaurant chain may stop putting cherries atop milkshakes

Cherries (Best) -- Cherries are one of the few natural foods to contain melatonin, the chemical that helps control our body's internal clock.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Your milkshake at Steak 'n Shake may soon come without a cherry on top.

The restaurant chain, which had an operating loss of nearly $19 million in the first quarter, is considering cutting cherries, a move that its CEO says would save $1 million a year, according to CBS News.

According to the report, traffic is down 13% at Steak 'n Shake restaurants over the last three years.

The chain is also considering a plan that includes transferring Steak 'n Shake's 400 company-owned restaurants to single-store franchisees.

Steak 'n Shake was founded in 1934.
