ORLANDO, Fla. - Habitat for Humanity volunteer, Marshall Dancy, is this week's Getting Results Award winner.
Dancy has been a consistent volunteer on over 100 projects spanning nearly 20 years.
The retired phone worker started volunteering in 1998 with his church group.
"Like the old saying goes," Dancy continues, "it became a habit after that."
A habit that has been hard to break. And for Dancy that's a good thing.
"To me, I think I'm the one that's really gained by it," Dancy says. "We gain as much working on it as the people that get it to be truthful."
When News 6 caught up with him he was helping lay sod at Keoka Harding's future home.
"It's a true dream come true." she says. "Everybody dreams of being a homeowner."
The renovated four bedroom, two bath house is nearly ready for Hardy and her four kids. She says the sod they're laying today will one day be a beautiful lawn for them to play.
Over time, Hardy has gotten to know Marshall along with all the other regular volunteers. She says his leadership helps everyone.
"He's been working for Habitat for a long time and he's amazing how he gets the stuff done." she laughs. "He's a great person, he truly is."
Jenifer Gallagher, senior director of Resource Development for Habitat for Humanity Orlando, says Dancy stands out as a leader and embodies the volunteering spirit.
"He's always the first one to the site and the last one to leave," she says. "His generous spirit is just amazing and the fact he's so positive all the time just sets him apart. He's an amazing man and we're so lucky to have him."
Dancy, 84, is already looking forward to the next project. "Well, I've enjoyed it," he says. "It's something that's a lot of fun and I think one of the big things is the people. That's what counts."
If you know someone making a difference in Central Florida we want to know. You can nominate someone you know using this form. They could be the next "Getting Results Award" winner.
