SANFORD, Fla - The traditional school library is getting a makeover that's getting results in our school. Wilson Elementary School in Sanford now calls it the "STEAM Center."

The new STEAM Center is a collaborative learning space where students can hone their skills in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.

It all started as an idea to renovate the library after alumni -- who are now parents -- noted the media center hadn't changed in 20 years.

Thanks to PTA fundraising, school funds, grants and plenty of volunteers over the summer, the center got a big summer makeover. Now students have laptops, LEGOs, robots, hands-on projects and coding exercises to stimulate their minds.

"When you have hands-on learning opportunities, when students are able to inquire and problem solve and work collaboratively together, those are the things that really increase engagement and really foster that love for learning," principal Keely Mitchell said.

Wilson Elementary is not done with the concept. Now, the PTA and school are raising funds for a phase two, where they can add an outdoor classroom as well as a "tinker space."
