Summer program for kindergartners softens transition into school year

Seminole Science Charter School hosts kindergartner readiness program

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – With just a few weeks left before summer break ends, some students are getting a head start on the school year.

A kindergartner readiness program is getting results at Seminole Science Charter School.

This is the first year the school is hosting a week-long program for incoming kindergartners.

The program is designed to help ease the transition into school for little ones.

Each lesson, activity and instructional interaction gives the kids a sneak preview of what kindergarten will be like when school actually begins.

The soft introduction is aimed at taking some of the anxiety out of the process for kids and their parents.

“It’s a shortened day, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., showing them everything they need to know,” Becc Lester, community outreach coordinator for SSCS, said. “Centers, playground time, lunch procedures – things like that.”

Teachers said they also appreciate a chance to get to know the students beforehand, which allows them to know what to expect before school starts.

"So far, so good! I'm really pleased with the progress I've seen in the couple days we've had them,” kindergarten teacher Gayle Courtney said. “It’s going to make the school year so much easier in the long run."

The school year for students at Seminole Science Charter will officially begin Aug. 10.
