Getting Results Award: HOA treasurer saves his neighbors thousands

John Tenuta nominated for Getting Results Award winner

SANFORD, Fla. – HOA Treasurer John Tenuta is this week's Getting Results Award winner.

Tenuta saved his neighbors thousands when he noticed an accounting error on their books.

When Tenuta moved into the Riverview Townhomes in Seminole County he thought it was perfect for his retired lifestyle.

The HOA pools their resources and pays many of the bills. But when he became treasurer, he noticed something was off.

"The numbers were wrong. It just didn't add up."

For 40 years John was an executive for a financial services company.

"I'm a numbers guy," he says. "So looking at numbers, they mean more to me than just numbers."

Turns out the community was paying more than it was taking in.

"I went further and further and started to research it and go back. That's when I realized there was an error."

Tenuta estimates it took what would have been 40 billable hours to find out the community of 191 townhomes was being billed for 320. He doesn't blame anyone and calls it a human mistake. A mistake he found and as a result saved his community over $70,000.

Fellow board member John Godsey nominated John for the award.

"That guy got results for us, he deserves some recognition," he said.
