Department of Health: Zika cases in Florida up to 1,000

Eight new travel-related cases in South Florida

The Sunshine State has surpassed more than 1,000 cases of people infected with the Zika Virus, the Florida Department of Health announced on Tuesday.

There are eight new travel related cases: four in Broward, two in Pinellas and one in St. Lucie County, including one pregnant woman. The new cases bring the total of travel-related infections to 728 in Florida.

One new non-travel related case is in Miami Dade County, according to the health department update. There are 147 reported non-travel related cases.

The department has conducted Zika virus testing on more than 8,900 people in Florida. All county health departments offer free Zika testing to pregnant women, at Gov. Rick Scott's request.

As of Tuesday, 104 pregnant women in Florida have been infected with the virus, according to the update.
