Study: Marijuana users 3 times more likely to die from high blood pressure
LONDON – A new study found marijuana smokers were three times more likely to die from high blood pressure than those who do not use the drug.
Reuters reports the study published in the European Journal of Preventative Cardiology also found the risk to marijuana smokers increases with every year of use.
The 6-year study was made up of over 1,200 people.
The death rates from hypertension of those in the study who used marijuana were 3.43-times higher than those who did not.
"Marijuana stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, leading to increases in heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen demand," said Barbara Yankey, one of the co-leaders of the research.
The report added that there was no link between marijuana use and dying from heart diseases.
