Orlando to vote on medical marijuana rules

Municipal Planning Board recommends limits to dispensaries

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando City Council is expected to vote Monday on rules for medical marijuana.

The Municipal Planning Board voted last month to recommend limits to medical marijuana dispensaries in Orlando.

The new rules would allow seven dispensaries in the city, which is currently the same number of companies licensed by the state to sell marijuana.

The new rules would also prohibit where dispensaries would be allowed to open. Shops would be prohibited from opening within 200 feet of homes, within 1,000 feet of schools and within a mile of another dispensary.

In addition, businesses would be be limited to the hours of 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

"We want people to be able to access this type of medication, to be able to pick it up before or after work," Chief Planner Jason Burton said last month. "We don't want to become essentially the bedroom community for all the medical cannabis dispensaries within the region."

"The laws will change and we're going to have to adapt, so I think that this is a good start and we'll see where it goes," said Karen Anderson, planning board chairperson.

Orlando has so far approved three dispensary locations, including the Knox Medical Facility in Ivanhoe Village.

Monday's meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m.
