It took 10 years, but there's a new top movie in town.

"Avengers: Endgame" is now the highest-grossing movie of all time. The superhero blockbuster dethroned James Cameron's "Avatar" for the title.

As of Friday, "Endgame" has grossed just over $2.789 billion around the world since its April 26 opening, according to Box Office Mojo. That's still several hundred thousand dollars behind Avatar's $2,789.7 billion, but "Endgame" will surpass that after the weekend box office is counted.

In a statement, Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn congratulated Marvel Studios and Disney for the film's success. "And thank you to the fans around the world who lifted 'Avengers: Endgame' to these historic heights," he added.

But Horn didn't discount the success and staying power of "Avatar," which is now under Disney ownership since the company's acquisition of a huge chunk of 21st Century Fox.

"Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s 'Avatar' remains as powerful as ever, and the astonishing achievements of both of these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience," Horn said.

This isn't the only record "Endgame" has shattered. It also had the biggest global opening of all time.
