What your Facebook photo reveals about you

Study links smiles to happiness

ORLANDO, Fla. – What does your Facebook profile picture say about you? Maybe more than you think.

A study recently released by researchers at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville found that students who were smiling in their profile photo showed a higher level of life satisfaction years later.

The study surveyed 92 freshmen during their first semester. They used photos which could be graded on smile intensity. The students were asked to complete a questionnaire that asked how happy they were with their lives.

After 3.5 years, in their final semester, they were asked to fill out another life satisfaction questionnaire. The sample dwindled to 48 students as time passed and many students dropped out or transferred.

The results showed that smile intensity was correlated with self-reported life satisfaction. Students who smiled more were generally happier with their lives and their social relationships.

One point to note, the study was initiated in the fall of 2005 when Facebook was in it's infancy and only available on certain college campuses.
