1 dead, 1 hurt in 'retaliation shooting,' Daytona Beach police say

Shooting reported near Bethune Cookman University

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Daytona Beach authorities have one person in custody and are searching for another in a shooting on Friday afternoon.

Police say a man and a woman were shot at a salon at 810 Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd. in Daytona Beach, a couple of blocks away from the university.

The shooter, who police say is Deandre Peterson, is in custody. Police said the shooting is in retaliation to an incident on Monday.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said he believes the shooting was prompted when the victim reported Peterson's friend to police.

The friend, 23-year-old Justin Williams, apparently shot at the victim's car on Monday, but the victim was not hit by the bullets. Police are searching for Williams and say they believe he was involved in the shooting.

The male victim, identified as Quordre Wiley, was shot in the chest and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said the bullet went through Wiley and hit his aunt in the leg. Friday night, police said Wiley died from his injuries.

The woman's 11-year-old son was standing next to her when the shooting occurred, but the boy was not hit.
