2 motorcyclists injured in hit-and-run, New Smyrna Beach police say

Police locate, charge driver, authorities say

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Authorities arrested a driver believed to be involved in a hit-and-run crash Friday afternoon that left two motorcyclists injured, the New Smyrna Beach Police Department said.

The driver of a pickup truck fled after crashing into the motorcycle the pair was riding around 4:20 p.m., officials said.

State Road 44 West was shut down near Interstate 95 following the crash, but reopened around 5 p.m., authorities said.

Both riders were taken to the hospital as trauma alerts, police said.

Police said the driver of the truck, 52-year-old David Watkins, of Georgia, was found around 6:30 p.m. 

Watkins was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, authorities said.

His bond was initially at $25,000 Friday, but was lowered to $5,000 Saturday, jail records show.
