LAKELAND, Fla. - A 2-year-old boy has died after a dresser fell on him at his Lakeland home, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Officials said Connor DeLong apparently climbed on a dresser Sunday morning to get a baby monitor, and the dresser fell on top of him.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Connor's mother, Meghan DeLong, checked on him and his brother, with whom he shared a bedroom, at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, and both were asleep in their cribs.

The mother said she heard Conner’s voice about five minutes before entering his room and found him unresponsive underneath the dresser, according to officials.

Meghan DeLong said that Conner had been taking the baby monitor off the top of the dresser over the last week or so, so she moved it to a window sill behind the dresser, according to authorities.

Deputies said it appears Connor climbed out of his crib and tried to climb up on the dresser when it fell on him.

An autopsy showed the cause of death to be mechanical asphyxia. The manner of death was ruled accidental.

Conner's death comes the same week that a Marion County girl was killed by a falling TV.
