DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Volusia County Teachers Organization voted 91 percent in favor of a new contract with the school board late Thursday afternoon.
Officials said only 9 percent disagreed with the contract that was hashed out between negotiators.
"This is one of the highest turnouts in recent years for a contract vote," said Andrew Spar, President of the Volusia Teachers Organization. "These are tough times and the teachers have continued to step up to keep our schools running. I think the teachers felt this was a fair deal."
The contract settlement calls for eligible teachers to receive a step increase and for new teachers not eligible for a step to receive a one-time $100 bonus.
The ratified contract will go before the school board on Tuesday.
The district also settled with the two other bargaining units.
The Volusia Educational Support Association will vote on their agreement on Monday and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees will vote on their agreement by the end of the month.
