Port Canaveral to undergo $100-million makeover

More people means more revenue, business owners say

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Port Canaveral will be undergoing approximately $100 million in construction projects in 2012.

The renovations could bring more cruise ships and vacationers to Brevard County, giving a much-needed boost in tourism.

The project includes a new cruise terminal, a new cargo terminal, a new fire station, and seven story welcome center.

"Being out here at the port really helps the port is just a magnet for people and activity," said Rusty Fischer, a restaurant owner who recently expanded his business.

Port Canaveral, which already employs about 13,000 people, will bring in more employees with more revenue from foot traffic.

"More people means more revenue," said Sindy Smith, a sunglasses retailer at Port Canaveral.

"Since we've had the space center changing direction this is great for our local community," Smith said.

The rumor of more jobs comes as a nice change for the Space Coast.

"We just love being out here and can't wait to see the future," Fischer said.
