Cops: Armed robber shoots himself in chest

24-year-old robbed gas station, shot self when police tried to arrest him

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – New Smyrna Beach police officers arrested a man they say was attempting to rob a gas station when he shot himself in the chest.

Police say William Thomas Redmond, 24, went to the the Marathon Gas Station on North Dixie Freeway armed with a revolver around 9:30 p.m. Monday night and demanded money from the store clerk.

Redmond took the money and drove away. Police said they found Redmond on North Orange Avenue a short time later and when officers attempted to arrest him, he refused to put the gun down so officers used a Taser gun on him. After Redmond fell down, he shot himself in the chest with a .38-caliber handgun.

Redmond was taken to Halifax Medical Center to be treated for the self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

No other details have been released.
