Police: Elementary teacher abused handicapped students

Patricia LaMantia, 56, charged with 2 counts of child abuse, police say

APOPKA, Fla. – An Orange County teacher was arrested on child abuse charges after Apopka police say she abused two handicapped students.

Patricia LaMantia, 56, a teacher at Dream Lake Elementary School was arrested and charged with two counts of child abuse Thursday.

Police said they were contacted Thursday morning by Principal Gary Schadow of Dream Lake Elementary about a possible child abuse case involving a faculty member.

Upon arriving to the school, police said they found two "profoundly handicapped" students had suffered minor injuries during separate incidents, involving their teacher.

It's not clear how old the students are or when the incidents happened.
