Van snaps power pole in Volusia crash; US 1 reopens

Driver tried to avoid hitting dog, police say

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – U.S. 1 has reopened in New Smyrna Beach on Thursday morning after a van crashed into a utility pole, knocking out power to hundreds of customers, authorities said.

The crash happened about 8:10 a.m. near Orange Street.  Both northbound and southbound lanes had been closed.

According to police, the driver of the van slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting a dog.  The driver then lost control of the vehicle and slammed into the pole, police said.

Crews from the New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission are replacing the pole, which was broken in half by the force of the impact.

The driver was not seriously hurt.

It's not known what happened to the dog.
